Delivered on-demand professional education on net-zero design.
Challenge
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) launched a new online education platform and sought high-quality content to educate LEED professionals on emerging sustainability practices and certifications.
To support adoption of the platform and demonstrate the potential of digital learning, USGBC offered competitive grants for organizations to develop impactful, on-demand educational content.
Approach
As a Board Member for the USGBC San Diego Chapter, I identified an opportunity to showcase regional leadership in sustainable building design while advancing professional education at scale.
I applied for and secured a USGBC grant to develop an on-demand course highlighting sustainability and innovation in the San Diego-Tijuana region. We selected the J. Craig Venter Institute, the first net-zero energy laboratory in the United States, as a flagship case study to bring complex sustainability concepts to life for a professional audience.

Solution
I led the course from concept through production and launch, collaborating across architecture, engineering, and sustainability partners to ensure technical accuracy and instructional clarity.
- Program Strategy: Defined learning objectives aligned to LEED accreditation and professional development requirements.
- Content Development: Designed a multi-part course that translated complex net-zero concepts into practical, accessible learning.
- Production Leadership: Partnered with the J. Craig Venter Institute, ZGF Architects, Point Energy Innovations, Integral Group, Chris Giles Images, and the USGBC San Diego Chapter to produce high-quality video content.
- Learning Design: Delivered the course in a video-first format, using interviews, expert discussions, guided walkthroughs, and graphic overlays to support comprehension of technical systems.

Results
The final program, Designing a Net Zero Energy Laboratory: J. Craig Venter Institute, launched as a three-part, on-demand course featuring more than 20 videos and expert interviews.
- Achieved a 5-star rating on the USGBC Education platform.
- Recognized by USGBC as a model for online educational programming.
- Expanded access to advanced sustainability education for LEED professionals through scalable, self-paced learning.
The course demonstrated how well-designed digital education can accelerate professional learning, showcase innovation, and extend the reach of mission-driven organizations.
