Empowering museums to implement sustainability initiatives.
Project
One of Balboa Park Cultural Partnership’s (BPCP) key initiatives focuses on making Balboa Park one of the “greenest” public parks in the world. This work includes ten LEED Certified Buildings and a number of other green initiatives such as reduced water usage parkwide, and encouraging visitors to walk, bike, or take public transit.
As part of this focus, Balboa Cultural Partnership was looking to create tools to assist staff members in playing an active role in further greening the park and their organizations.
Approach
I started by looking at the green initiatives already in place, such as the Green Purchasing Program at the San Diego Zoo. This program focuses on encouraging visitors to only purchase sustainably farmed palm oil in an effort to protect orangutans. By leveraging the programs already in place we had several best practices that could be shared and implemented parkwide.
Working closely with the BPCP Green Team, we decided to create a workbook-style guide, “The Green Impact Guide,” to assist park employees and volunteers with implementing sustainability best practices. The goal was to create a sustainability handbook comprised of new and existing tools to advise the successful implementation of sustainable business practices and operations for arts & cultural organizations.
Result
The framework focuses on six key areas:
- Energy
- Water
- Waste Management
- Green Purchasing
- Alternative Transportation
- Marketing & Promotions
The workbook-style guide shares best practices and initiative ideas that can be followed by Balboa Park’s arts and cultural institutions. It makes it easy to evaluate and improve current practices and policies with tools, resources, and templates.
